Earlier today, Google held the keynote of their annual developers conference I/O at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Just like everybody was anticipating, the Mountain View-based giant introduced, among others, the next version of their mobile operating system which is, for the time being, called Android M.
Over the past few weeks, the rumor mill talked about the new features that will arrive with Android M and many of the rumors were confirmed today during the Google I/O 2015 keynote. During the same keynote we also learned that Google will stick to the last year’s strategy, making the new Android version available for testing purposes as Developer Preview. The Android M Developer Preview is already available for download for a number of Nexus devices. You can download it for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player from here.
The first new Android M feature demoed at Google I/O 2015 was the new app permission management. Apps will no longer ask for permissions at installation, as the user will be asked for important permissions when the app tries to access them for the first time. Google used Whatsapp’s voice messages as an example. When you want to use the voice message in a chat for the first time, Whatsapp will ask for your permission to use the microphone and you will be able to deny it or allow it. Of course, you will be able to go into the settings and modify the permissions for each app.
The new Android version also adds Chrome custom tabs, allowing app developers to deeper integrate Chrome into their apps. When you access a web page from within an app, a Chrome tab will run on top of the respective app. The advantage? Well, it makes everything faster as Chrome will know to prefetch the content, not to mention about easy access to Chrome autofill or sign-ins.
Android M also arrives with app deep linking. Developers will be able to add the an “autoVerify” attribute to their app code so the OS knows that certain types of links should always open in a particular app. Why you should be happy about that? Because you will no longer see that annoying “Open with” selector prompt.
Google also launched Android Pay which isn’t an Android M exclusive, as it will work with Android devices running KitKat and higher. As you might have guessed already, Android Pay is about mobile payments and the good news is that it’s open source, so retailers and other partners can integrate it with their services with ease.
Just like early reports have suggested, Android M comes with native support for fingerprint sensors. Android will be able to natively use the fingerprint readers for things like authentications, lock screen, or mobile payments. Of course, if the device is equipped with a fingerprint scanner. Since we have the feature embedded in the Android M source code, we might be actually seeing at least one Nexus smartphone with fingerprint sensor by the end of the year.
Lollipop was kind of a mess in terms of RAM management and battery life. In Android M they have a new thing called Doze which, according to Google, is capable of doubling the stand by time of Android devices (or at least for the Nexus 9). This basically puts the apps in an even deeper sleep state when unused for a while, but the apps will wake up for important events like alarms or notifications.
Android M introduces support for USB type-c. Therefore, besides faster charging, you will be able to use your Android M device to charge other devices which is kind of cool.
The new update also comes with easier text selection for improved copy / paste and something called Direct Share which learns the contacts you share things with on a regular bases and puts them to the top of the list. They also redesigned the Volume Controller, so when you touch the volume buttons and the controllers appears on the screen, you can adjust volume level for ringtone, media, and alarms individually.
There’s also the Google Now on Tap feature, that has been, for some reason, left out of the Android M presentation at Google I/O 2015. Google Now will become more aware of what’s going on in an app and it will offer you contextual information and answers. For example if you are chatting with one of your friends about seeing a movie or going to a restaurant Now On Tap will show a card about that movie or that restaurant with a simple tap and hold on the Home button.
Unfortunately, the Google representatives failed to mention when will Android M will be released to the public or what dessert name or software version number it will have. Anyway, judging by company’s release schedule for 2014, you should expect M to launch sometime in October along with a new Nexus device.
Any guesses about the Android M dessert name? The comments section below is all yours.
