YouTube may no longer work on your pre-2013 smart devices

Google is recognized for its not great support. If you employ a problem using a Google account or associated service, all the best trying to talk with someone at Google regarding it. It’s an extremely hands-off means of dealing with products, and yes it looks as though which extends to support for older devices to be able to use those services.

This week Google has retired its Data API v2 for YouTube, so that a long set of smart devices created in 2012 or earlier will not have functioning YouTube apps. This is the video you are likely to see playing if you or more of your respective devices are affected:

It’s quite a bit less though Google hasn’t given fair warning with this change. The retirement of Data API v2 was announced in March 2014, plus a migration guide for developers was developed available in September not too long ago. That’s lots of time for upgrades that occur. However, there’s still a selection of devices which will lose functionality, including 2nd-generation Apple TV, Google TV version a few, Sony and Panasonic smart TVs and Blu-ray players manufactured pre-2013, any device running iOS 6 or earlier, and then for any game consoles that don’t support Flash or HTML5. There are sure to get many more devices, specially in the TV and Blu-ray player product categories, which will soon have non-functioning YouTube apps.

Watching YouTube is incredibly easy to accomplish and most men and women have a laptop, PC, or recent streaming device that’s capable. However, there’s going being a lot of consumers available with smart TVs from 2012 or earlier with no purpose of upgrading for many years yet. In that case a streaming box will probably be necessary should the YouTube app on the TV was being used and requires replacing.

I think this really is another illustration of how our attachment to connected features gets to be products which has a growing set of broken features. In this case Google has did not offer legacy support because of this API, and manufacturers have do not spend any moment or money upgrading an app because there’s no profit from it. We are all just required to upgrade.
